We know that matter is a substance that occupy space and has mass. To prove air is a matter we need to prove that air occupy space and air has mass.

Materials required:

  • Three balloons
  • Thread
  • Ruler
  • Pin

Procedure:

  1. Fill one balloon with air. (Balloon filled with air inflate the balloon which shows that air occupy space.
  2. Fill two balloons with almost equal in size.
  3. Tie both the balloons at both ends of the ruler.
  4. Have them tie another piece of string around the centre of the ruler and hang it up so that the two balloons are balanced and they do not rub against a wall.
  5. Take the pin and make a small hole in one balloon. When you step away, make sure the two balloons are still balanced.

Observation:

The balance changes as the air in the one balloon leaked out and the balloon became lighter.

Results:

Air occupy space as well as it has mass, this proves that air is a matter.
