How to Grow Moulds in Bread

Moulds are the fuzzy growth that grows on the rotten fruit or food substances or bread, when these food substances are kept open for a long period of time, more than 4 days or more than a week.

Materials required:

  • Zip lock bag
  • Bread
  • Water

Procedure:

  1. Take a bread, wet it with water.
  2. Put that bread in a zip lock bag.
  3. Keep it for 3 to 4 days.
  4. After 4 days, observe every day and record your observation.

Observation:

  • On 5th day you will observe some grey patches on the bread.
  • On 6th day the patches increase, and gradually it will increase every day.

Result:

These moulds shall grow like this as shown in the picture. These filaments grow inside the bread are called mycelium, these are not roots, these are the filaments that grows and absorb nutrients. It grows above the bread and leads to a spherical ball like structure called sporangia which produces spores. That spores comes out and deposited at some place where these spores reproduce to grow filaments. So, it is advisable to do this experiment in a closed container or zip lock bag.
