Intermolecular Space

molecules, atoms, chemistry

The space between the molecules of any substance or matter is known as intermolecular space.

Materials required:

  • Wooden block or any solid object
  • Water
  • Glasses
  • Salt
  • Spoon
  • Colour

Procedure:

  1. Put your finger inside the solid wooden block.
  2. Put ink on the wooden block, it will remain on the top.

You cannot. As there is no inter molecular space between the molecules of solid objects.

  1. Now try to put your finger inside the water in the glass. This shows that water has some inter molecular space.
  2. Move your hand in air. You can easily move your hand as there is maximum space between the molecules.
  3. Take a glass of water and add one drop of colour into it.
  4. Leave it for some time.

You will observe that the colour is randomly moving in water and mixing in it. It will thoroughly be mixed with water because the colour molecules enter into the space between the molecules of water.

  1. Again, take one glass of water, and add one spoon of salt into it. Stir it well.

You will observe that the salt is completely dissolved in water. The molecules of salt enter into the space between the molecules of water.

Result:

Solid has very less or no intermolecular space.

Liquid has intermolecular space little more than solid.

Gas has maximum intermolecular space.

  1. Hello! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any trouble with hackers? My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up losing many months of hard work due to no back up. Do you have any solutions to prevent hackers?

  2. Everything is very open with a clear clarification of the challenges. It was really informative. Your website is useful. Many thanks for sharing! Rhoda Car Wolpert
